In loving memory of Michael Denison much beloved of his family, dear brother to David and John, born 18th June 1937, who after a short illness died in Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield on 5th of July 2024. Rest in Peace.
At the age of 11, Michael won a scholarship to Thornes House Grammar School in Wakefield. Academically, he did extremely well at the school and as a result was awarded a place on a degree course at Bradford College. It was not an easy time, Michael sometimes walked to college or back to Wakefield.
There was a Chess café in Bradford which he liked to frequent, his brother David would visit him for a cup of tea and a game, where they either played together or with others. Chess had already become a hugely important part of Michael’s life.
Michael duly graduated with flying colours from Bradford College. His mother Norah Denison (nee McTiernan) and brother David travelled overnight from Wakefield to London to proudly witness Michael receiving his science degree from Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, wife of King George V, at the Albert Hall.
From a sporting perspective, as a young man, Michael was a very good cricketer. A fast bowler, he would leap in the air at the end of his run up to ‘wang,’ a common colloquial verb of the time, his delivery with genuine pace to the batsman’s end. He was also more than a decent player with bat in hand.
Following his graduation, Michael pursued a career in the teaching profession. He taught Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in the Wakefield area at both Crofton School and Snapethorpe Secondary Modern in Lupset. At Snapethorpe his love of nature and gardening equipped him to keep an observation Bee hive to the great interest of his students.
He also taught chess, passing the Kings game on, not only to many members of our family for which we were all most grateful, but far and wide beyond that social group. Some would say this was inevitable, due to his long term involvement with the Wakefield Chess Club. He fronted the Wakefield chess team for many years, which he joined aged 16, and the game became his lifetime passion. Playing top board in many inter-club encounters and on occasion becoming the champion of the Wakefield Club. He also served as club secretary for some time.
Once he had retired as a school teacher, his commitment to teaching chess in the local community was unparalleled. Michael literally spent years running a chess club at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Wakefield and latterly, years teaching chess at Wakefield Girls High School, where he was held in great esteem for his dedication to his vocation. All of which was conducted on a voluntary basis.
Michael was also very fond of gardening, as well as the birds visiting his garden. He kept his avian community fed and watered throughout the year at the Denison family home on Oakwood Avenue in Flanshaw Park. Enjoying a reputation for green-fingers, he specialised in nursing other people’s house plants back to rude health from the brink of extinction, as well as propagating dynasties of offspring from hardier specimens which he generously passed on to to friends and family.
Michael was 87 when he passed over to the other side of the other side on the 5th of July, 2024, after a protracted struggle with what became a terminal illness. In the words of his dear mother Norah Denison: “Goodnight and Godbless our Michael, you were a kind, sensitive and caring son and brother, uncle, cousin and friend."
To a true teacher and spreader of the chess message with love from us all. You are at peace.
